This year so far... [25 May 2007|09:24am]
[ mood | contemplative ]
[ music | Frank Sinatra- Love is Here to Stay ]

It's been really rough and really great all at the same time.

There has been a lot going on with my extended family in regard to health issues and we don't really know if either of my grandfathers are going to make it to the end of the year, let alone beyond.

We've had a scare with my sister concerning her health that has finally been sorted out for the better. She's not allowed to take additional hormones ever again (ie birth control), but she's also not going to have stroke at 25.

And we lost a friend a little over three weeks ago. She was much loved, even by her greatest critics. It's puts life in perspective though. I have list just like my friend did of things I want or need to get done in this lifetime and she was supposed to get hers done, but she won't have the chance now. I want my list to be very short when it's my time to go.

I can't help but feel that others probably view me as emotionally cold to the bad things that are happening. I talk about my problems to others as though they don't bother me because if I felt the full impact every time I talked about it, I would do little else but cry.

It's shallow, but one of the things that I've taken away from the things that have happened is to enjoy the life you have right now. You can either sit and fester or you can move forward and look for new opportunities and adventures. I choose to dance. Cliche but true...

Arrr, What type o' swinger ye be? [25 May 2007|08:34am]
[ mood | awake ]

I totally yanked this from a Facebook buddy, but there really was no chance that I would be able to resist. Dancing and pirates, mutually exclusive yet at the same venue... I never had a chance.

You scored as Lindy Hop, Your best swing dance is Lindy Hop, the ragingly popular swing of the 1920's and 30's. To the Lindy die-hard, looking cool isn't as important as having a great night. Swing isn't just a dance to you; it's a lifestyle.

Boistrous and emphatic, you are the eternal optimist. Lemons? Lemonade! And some fine lemonade at that. Your friends admire you for your positive outlook, but sometimes wonder if there is more going on underneath than they know.

Yeah, I love to watch movies.

SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 movies, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 241 movies on this list. Copy this list, go to your own facebook account and paste this as a note. Then, put x's next to the movies you've seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun!

Ugh! [11 Apr 2007|05:18am]
[ mood | sick ]

Of course with the cold weather descended upon us again, I've got another sinus infection. And this one was accompanied by a nice, severe bout of dehydration. So I didn't get a whole heck of a lot of sleep last night.

I really don't need to be sick right now. The UAH Patton James dance is this Friday, but I'm also going to Atlanta next weekend for ATLX (Atlanta Lindy Exchange). I'm going to need ALL of my strength for that. I guess I have to suck it up early and go to the doctor.

Your Life's A Soundtrack [09 Apr 2007|09:34pm]
[ mood | predatory ]

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?

So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
NO CHEATING

Opening Credits: Lullaby of the Leaves- Benny Goodman
Waking Up: Exactly Like You- Pee Wee Russell
First Day At School: Which Switch Witch- Red Norvo
Falling In Love: On the Sunny Side of the Street- Lionel Hampton
Fight Song: Sick & Tired- Default
Breaking Up: Nero's Fiddle- Clutch (Don't let the name fool you, it's pretty harsh stuff)
Prom: I Could Write a Book- Harry Connic Jr. (When Harry Met Sally soundtrack)
Life's OK: Learnin' the Blues- Frank Sinatra *sigh*
Mental Breakdown: The Boys' Night Out- The Rat Pack
Driving: Believe- Burning Paris
Flashback: Savin' Me- Nickelback
Getting Back Together: What Do You Do?- Papa Roach
Wedding: It Had to Be You- Harry Connic Jr.
Sex Scene: The Freaks Are Coming- Smile Empty Soul (Hmmm, I wonder what this says about me...)
Birth of Child: Stardust- Frank Sinatra
Final Battle: Leg to Stand On- Theory of a Deadman
Death Scene: More (Theme from Mondo Cane)- Frank Sinatra & Count Basie
Funeral Song: Blue Moon- Mel Torme
End Credits: Moon Baby- Godsmack

Yeah... you see a bit of difference in my listening preferences?

So Strange... [07 Apr 2007|12:15am]
[ mood | cold ]

Alabama weather is the craziest I've ever seen. All of last week, the temperature was in the 80's and then this sudden drop off into the 50's-30's. Not only that, but for a few minutes tonight, was SNOWING!!! If you don't believe me ask the rest of the gaming crew: Trey, Jen, Stephen, or Benjamin.

It's April! It's Spring! Not Winter, or Summer, but Spring! I just wish we'd have one of those sometime. I hear that they're really quite nice.

.... and it stinks! At least it would, if I could actually breathe through my nose. The semester has been going well. Still as busy as usual, but I'm getting the hang of coping and not getting too overwhelmed.

Still dancing of course. If there is one thing that I don't ever want to give up, it's dancing. It's an escape and a release. I've been working on my Lindy Hop Swing lately, and I'm excited because I'm getting better at it. My swing out and Lindy circle are good but I'm so into structure that I'm just abysmal at a lot of the improv. I'm working on it though and the practice helps a lot. I've been going up to Nashville to the Jump, Jive, & Swing dances with a few more experienced Lindy dancers and it's been a whole heck of a lot of fun. I would have gone up again on Sunday for a more informal, cozy coffee shop dance, but I got all kinds of congested and icky this weekend.

I'm now going to go ponder on......things. =)

Wooooooow, I didn't actually realize how long it had been since I last updated. [14 Dec 2006|01:24am]
[ mood | grateful ]
[ music | Too Close For Comfort- Frank Sinatra ]

I guess I should apologize, but almost all of my friends are people that have regular contact with me so I can't feel too bad. Plus, I've been doing this thing lately where I actually tell people what I'm really thinking instead of putting it up here. It seems to be working well for me so far. But, on to the show!

I'm excited that school is over for the moment. Now I get to do those things that I have been ignoring for the past couple of days, weeks, or months. Cleaning my car and room, wrapping presents, planning my mother's 50th birthday party are on the top of that list. I should probably be working more right now that I have the free time, but I'm afraid that if I do, my brain won't have sufficient time to re-materialize itself before the next semester starts. And I'm much more interested in enjoying the fun things since I haven't been fully able to in a while.

Been sick on and off for the past month. It started with a kidney stone a couple days before my birthday through a cold that had a mean comeback a week ago. Being eternally under the weather is just annoying at this point, so hopefully I won't be sick at all for the remaining cold months.

In hopes of a healthier me, I'm going swing dancing in Atlanta this weekend and exited about it! Hopefully I won't cough out a lung at the exercise, haven't been dancing enough for a while. I also get to test out my new dance shoes that I got last week before I was sick again. Of course, I also get to hang out with a buddy of mine, so I'm glad about that too. But I have a lot of potential plans this weekend so it may turn into a busy one!

[ mood | ecstatic ]

As usual, I haven't updated in quite some time. Finding the inclination to sit down and write is hard for me. So instead, I go through all the things I've done in my mind, thinking that I'll update, but I just never do. I get distracted by the lures that the internet throws out there, deliberating trying to snatch me away from doing anything even partially useful. Like now..... *checks email, looks at facebook, checks online comics, uploads weekend pictures*

Yay, back now!! I really did have such a great time this weekend. [info]canoecrasher and I drove down to Birmingham to meet Shannon and Co. and we all went to City Stages this weekend. Out of the nine stages, there was one that was just for dancing with live music. Obviously we spent most of our time there getting down with our bad selves, but we saw a lot of great bands dancing and non.

On Friday, there was some shows that I wanted to get up close for so I separated from the group to go play in the rock crowd. I saw Trapt for the second time, and then Puddle of Mudd and Shinedown, both of which were really great live. It took a little while, but I did end up holding the front barrier by the middle of Shinedown. I got some really great pictures from up in front.

The rest of the weekend consisted of dancing until you couldn't any longer, resting a bit and then doing it all over again. Lots of great music on the dance stage, including L'Angelus, The Martini Shakers, Patton James and the Synchromatics, and Joe Krown Swing Band. We also saw some other blues music, Frankie Velvet and Veltones, a little bit of Snoop Dogg, and !!The Beach Boys!! L'Angelus played a couple times on Friday and Saturday, and though it's unfortunate that I didn't get to see them on Friday, I was having fun elsewhere. They're a really great family band out of Louisiana that plays wonderful, fast-paced Cajun music and everyone should check them out at http://www.angelusband.com/ .

I had such fun making new dancing pals, getting red, meeting some bands, listening to good music, and dancing all weekend long! I can't wait until I get to do it again.

And Look! My little kitty is dancing too.

I had my most pressing finals last week so I had the weekend for more entertaining endeavors. Unfortunately there wasn't really much going on this weekend in Huntsvegas except for Panoply. [info]canoecrasher and I went on Saturday and saw some Cajun/Zydeco dancing among other things. It was fun even with the sky threatening to open above us at any moment. We saw a lot of people that we knew from the different dancing groups around town, especially swing and contra. They always set up a section of Big Spring Park for different local and regional artists to sell their wares, and I had fun just walking through it all and admiring all the beautiful things. And there was a funnel cake involved. A day in the park is absolutely not complete without a funnel cake. Yum yum.

I also helped [info]canoecrasher move his stuff from [info]nrprise's to [info]mjeanette's house for the summer semester. There wasn't anything else going on until much later in the day and by 10pm, I really just didn't want to move from off the couch to go anywhere but home. The rainy weather seemed to make everyone lethargic and non-commital of plans until almost the middle of the night. It was very strange. But [info]nrprise had had an episode of Battlestar Galactica going while I was over there and it looked interesting, so we watched half of the initial mini-series before I was in sleepy-land. It's really good and I want to see more of the series. I watched the other half after I got off of work yesterday.

Robert and I also went to see Lucky Number Slevin last night and it turned out to be much better even than I thought it was going to be. Kinky Boots wasn't an option even though I found someone to go with me. Who'da thunk?

People think I'm crazy anyway, but I really want to see Kinky Boots when in comes out everywhere on Friday. I'm pretty sure I'm going by myself though. Hmm, oh well!

Paper, finals, studying, blah..... it makes my brain hurt at the end of every semester, but it won't last forever.

Patton James was pretty awesome on Friday. We just had a major kink in the form of the weather. A group had the exhibit hall in case of rain from 6-8, but our event was supposed to start at 8pm. Guess what? It rained and the group's band (who wasn't actually all that bad) didn't finish until 8:15. So we had a lobby full of dancers, a hall full of other students, a rock band to take down, a swing band to set up, and a floor full of gunk that almost ruined my dancing shoes. I don't do so horrible well under that particular kind of pressure. I get frantic and bossy; not so much on the fun for the people in my way.

Everything turned out okay though, even if we didn't start until around 8:45. Despite everything, we had a tremendous turnout. Ryan and I are staying on as officers next year, but Kerry is going to grad school in Pennsylvania and Shanna is taking her place as secretary. I guess the thing I was most disappointed about with the dance (besides falling on my ass swing dancing) was that we didn't get to hang out with the band before or after. We'd had to clear out pretty quickly after we finished so the UC could close.

Eep! Time to get ready to go cha-cha! Later!

The semester's almost over and I feel like I've gone through all the motions and accomplished nothing at all. I don't really even feel like I'm moving forward, still sitting in the same spot where I was three years ago. Yes, I've changed since then, but is it really enough to make a difference? I don't know....

For the most part, it's just me feeling sorry for myself, but I can't help but think its something bigger that's bothering me. I go through my rounds of jubilation and depression, mostly leaning toward the former, but I feel like I'm really just ignoring something else but I don't know what it is. It's natural to be confused, I guess. It's not like my life's bad at all. I have good friends and family, I go to school, make some money, have hobbies that I enjoy. I know people that are much better off, but more that are the opposite. Do I need some help sometimes, someone to listen and ask questions? Absolutely. Do I ever ask for those things? Nope. And whose fault is that? Mine.

Okay, enough for me right now. I'll be better tomorrow.

I have this really odd habit of reading in my car at night when I get home from wherever because I'm too lazy to get up and move for the two minutes it's take to go inside, into my room, and get ready for bed. Yosh thinks I'm crazy, especially when I do it during winter. I'm inclined to agree with her.

In other news, its been getting warmer outside, which is great. Outdoor activities are fun, but I dread summer temperatures and humidity more than almost anything else. I love being out in the woods, I'm just miserable when I get over-heated, sweaty, and dehydrated.

It's a wonder that I'm making complete sentences at almost 2am with a splitting headache.

[ mood | Ditzy- Yeah, I'm weird ]

I was playing with the colors for my friends page and tried to kind of match them to their actual pages and now I have Easter egg colors down the entire side of that page. Hmm, I'll have to mess with it again later.

Last night was the last night of swing for Tuesday nights and that makes me a little sad, but next month is Tango and I know that I need the practice with that. I got tired more quickly yesterday and the results are a bobbing, uncoordinated Danielle. Fun to watch but not so much to dance with, unless you don't mind me bumping into you.

This weekend is going to be much fun. A first friday dance at the Knights of Columbus and a West Coast Swing/Hustle workshop on Saturday from 1-4pm at the UC. And then I'm going contra dancing Saturday night! Yay! I haven't been contra dancing in two months or so and it is one of my favorite activities. Hmm, I know there's a contra workshop on Saturday as well from 5:30 to 6:30, but I don't know if that is going to be too much for me for one day. That will be nearly eight hours. I'll have to think about it. It'll probably depend on how I feel on Saturday. But if I go to the contra workshop, they'll feed me. You know I can't say no to that.

Classes are currently very boring and dry, though necessary. I have a test in Business Stats on Friday that shouldn't be difficult and a test in Music on Tuesday. That is the only class that I find marginally interesting, but its an easy filler course that I need to finish off my Electives. I find out if I got into Nursing School for the fall at the end of the month, Hopefully. Of course they took almost a month longer than they said they would last spring. My friends that were starting last year were not amused.

I work tonight and tomorrow night and I dread going in. For the past two weeks, Melissa hasn't been scheduling Nearly enough help at night. As a result, there's only one person that does the chores of three people in a portion of the usual allotted time. Its been stressful and exhausting when I don't get out of there til 1 or 2 in the morning with class that morning.

Egh, I have stuff I need to do, but I don't really feel like getting up.....
